GIRL SCOUT PARTNERS WITH BUDA LIBRARY

(March 25, 2009)  Mackenzie, a 5th grade Girl Scout at Buda Elementary School, is earning her Girl Scout Bronze Award as a Ready to Read partner with the Buda Public LibraryMartha Sanders, Children's Librarian at Buda PL, reports that while she is providing Ready to Read parenting classes in one room, Mackenzie is reading to the children.  Mackenzie worked with her mother and Martha to create three different storytimes with age-appropriate activities, puppet shows and other learning activities for children.   The 10-year-old is also publishing three theme-related brochures for parents.  Each brochure (the first one is "Buggy" About Books), includes stories, songs, fingerplays, healthy snacks and fun games parents can play with their children.  Read the entire story in the Hays Free Press

MID-YEAR REPORT SHOWS SUCCESS

CTLS submitted our mid-year report to our funders, Texas State Library and Institute for Museum and Library Services.  The outcomes for September through February show that:

  • 94% of teachers say the workshops confirm their own messages to parents about early literacy developments
  • 93% of parents and teachers like what they learned at the workshops
  • 91% of teachers indicate that library staff offered easy-to-implement, practical strategies for using the six early literacy skills in their classrooms
  • 91% of community partners see library staff's friendliness, flexibility and reliability as key assets in the partnership
  • 81% of parents say that book reading is more enjoyable due to the workshops
  • 78% of parents said the free books made a difference in how often they read to their child (thanks to the Tocker Foundation for these free books!)

The full report is here:  R2R Mid Year Report.doc.  Other reports can be found in Early Literacy By the Numbers.

Thanks so much for sharing Mackenzie's success story with the Ready to Read group. We never know what serendipitous connections we might forge as we spread the word about our early literacy series. Mackenzie enjoys reading to children and knew that she wanted to work with the library in some fashion to earn her Bronze Award. She saw our press release in the Free Press and the idea hit her. She and her fantastic Mom approached me with their fabulous idea. Thanks again for sharing her story.
